Practical updates

I had a good India-related day today!
I had the whole day to kill in Birmingham, so thought I'd get on with some tasks.

I visited a couple of independent travel agents to get a quote on my flight, which was about what I expected so that's good.
Unfortunately, they also confirmed my fears that the Visa application process has changed and I won't be able to wring a couple of extra days out of it, so that means no time for a trip to Manali. :( I'm disappointed, but had expected that to be the case. Will just have to save up for another trip.

Next, I tracked down the travel clinic my health centre referred me to. Apparently they made one attempt to contact me after I left multiple messages, and when there was no answer, gave up! Was not impressed, but have the deputy manger's word that she will personally call me within 2 days with possible appointment dates. So I guess that's sort of getting there.

Finally, I ran an India-themed night at Brownies. I'd planned to get them decorating their hands henna-style, they played an elephant version of Beetle!, and I also had some samosa and bhajis for them to try. I wanted to get some gelabi or other India sweets for them to try as well, and by happy coincidence drove past a street near the clinic which was almost like a street in India; complete with India banks. I went into a lovely restaurant/ sweet shop and the man in there was really helpful and friendly. He let me try anything and everything I wanted, made useful recommendations, and even gave me a discount. The food was amazing and he just reminded me so much of the way people interact in India that I am once again very excited. I think the brownies enjoyed it as well.

That's all for today, quite glad I've finally started to tick some things off the list.

Memories...

For some reason today I took my personal diary from my last trip to India off the shelf and started to read it. I've not opened it (them - it covers 4 books!) since I returned home almost 3 years ago.
I couldn't believe how many of the wonderful little things I've forgotten, and as I read, I began to miss the adventure that is living in India. My previous post suggested that I felt it wouldn't be such a thrill learning about the culture etc because I already know it, but I'd forgotten that actually, every day, sometimes even every minute, is a new adventure - especially when you're somewhere new and exciting.
So now I'm even more excited about my trip, but also nostalgic about the last one, and about the friends I made there. I'm still in touch with some of them, but others have sadly got a bit lost along the way. They'll always be a part of that adventure though; they're immortalised in my diary and my heart and I'll never forget them. Here's to making many more friends along the way...

Some thoughts

Hello!

Thought I'd add some thoughts....

The first Sangam Volunteers for the year have just started working over there. We're all connected on a private FB group so that we can share experiences and get to know each other. One of the girls currently there is also from England, and her photos and posts demonstrate her awe at the country. She's noted the cows in the road and the novelty of travelling on rickshaws or buying saris, for example.
It occurred to me that my initial experience will be very different as I've already done all these 'firsts' and actually, when I read her comments the Indian way of life and unique culture felt to me quite like a home that I've been missing. I guess in some ways it'll help me to settle in more quickly to the role I'll be playing out there, as I'll be able to concentrate on that as hopefully I'll re-adjust to India quite easily. On the other hand, I wonder if it means that my experience won't be quite as fulfilling - in the first instance - because it's something I've already done. I have no doubt that the actual working at Sangam part will be amazing and different, but the 'getting used to Indian culture and climate etc' might not be so much of a challenge. And in fact it'll probably totally throw me if I do struggle with that, so I hope it will all be as I say. I'm certainly feeling more and more excited about it with every photo I see or message I read about Sangam.

On a more practical note, I'm still trying to work out which immunisations I need if any - my local health centre is not a travel clinic and the masta one I was directed to hasn't answered their phones. I was intending to just turn up and demand some advice, but it's in Birmingham and my car's waiting to go into the garage for a new part so I can't get there at the moment. It's a good thing I'm being organised about them and haven't waited until the last minute, because if any do need updating it's going to be interesting fitting them into my continually filling diary for the summer.

Think that's all for now,

Philippa x
